A typical 500 megawatt coal burning power station produces over 125,000 tons of ash per year which, since it is unregulated by the EPA, is generally stored onsite in unlined “impoundments.” The smokestack or “fly” ash, the capture of which is now mandated, was formerly the cause of devastating smogs. It is very light in weight, and thus moves easily with flowing water.
