Fishing Boats Drag a Boom to Skim Oil from BP Deepwater Horizon Spill

Gulf of Mexico, USA

Gulf of Mexico. On the right is a large mat of oil and on the left clear water with strands of thick oil. Skimming collects the oil on the surface, but not sub aqueous, and not oil broken up by dispersants, which settles to the bottom. Often sea animals such as turtles, dolphins, and even whales are caught in the process, and perish when the collected oil is burned.
