Sea Of Despair
Waste impoundment at large plastic producer
Baytown, TX, USA
The explosion of natural gas production in the USA as the result of hydro-fracking created a glut in the domestic market, driving prices significantly below the rest of the world. The difficulty of exporting gas drove numerous developments: construction of compression/liquifaction terminals around the country and a fleet of specially designed tanker ships, conversion of legacy industries from coal to gas, and an explosion of plastic manufacturing. This plant is one of the world’s largest plastic producers, and one of the most toxic polluters in the USA.
