Too Much of a Good Thing

Jasper, Florida, USA

Phosphate is one of the three macro-nutrients essential to plant growth, the others being nitrogen and potassium. Fertilizer is a combination of these three elements, all of which have their unique environmental impact. When combined as fertilizer, the runoff from fields after application causes algae blooms in downstream water bodies, which depletes them of oxygen, creating anoxic conditions, and killing all life therein.
