As the arctic warms, efforts to extract the vast untapped mineral resources known to exist there will increasingly disrupt this fragile ecosystem. Ironically, this will accelerate the process of climate change in a mutually reinforcing effect. One of the most potent climate “time bombs” is the tundra, which sequesters tremendous amounts of methane out of the climate system, as long as it remains frozen.
