Used Boom Material For Containing Oil Spills

Mobile, Alabama An airport runway is covered by bundles of plastic float material which were placed during the BP Deepwater Horizon Spill In The Gulf Of Mexico in an effort to exclude the sea of oil from fragile habitat (like pelican rookeries) or to contain floating plumes of oil.
The Macondo Well released an estimated 780,000 cubic meters of oil into the ocean. Numerous measures were taken to contain the catastrophe: the floating oil was collected by skimming, then burned on the ocean surface (along with the many sea animals that were inadvertently caught). Also, heavy application of dispersants to dissolve and sink the oil created giant subsurface plumes, and a layer of sludge on the bottom of the ocean, killing plant and animal species there.
As a last resort, boom material was placed around fragile islands and inlets in an effort to protect them from the floating oil. The success of this effort was negligible.
