Grass Planting At “Mountaintop Removal” Coal Mining Site

around Kayford Mountain, West Virginia

Over 500 mountains and a million acres of Appalachian old-growth forest have been decimated by Mountaintop removal. This image illustrates the remnants of one mine in the process of remediation. The bright green areas at the bottom of the mine landscape are hydro-seed, a fast-growing mixture of grass and fertilizer that sprouts and dies in short order.
