Minus Hamilton Reenactment
Freed In The Raid
Actor Ronald Daise reenacts a first person account from Minus Hamilton, who was freed in the Combahee Raid
This segment was filmed in the rice fields of Bonny Hall, one of the plantations liberated in the raid.
This is the only first-person account from an enslaved person liberated in the Combahee Raid in the American Civil War. They spoke in a dialect that is incomprehensible to most English speakers that did not grow up hearing it.
Actor Ronald Daise is an expert in the Gullah-Geechee accent of the freed people of the sea islands of the South Carolina lowcountry.
Many thanks to US Fish and Wildlife Service for their generous support.
